Chiropractors/Knee Pain
Expert: Dr. Paul Newhart - 8/28/2009
QuestionDear Dr. Newhart,
For the past few years I have been having pain on the right side of my knee. It is not the knee cap, but what appears to be a the big ligament on that side. Mostly, I do not feel any pain unless I were to run on pavement, or run on the tradmill going over 7mph. For years I have avoided doing both. Now It hurts when I run on the treadmill at any rate. I took a trip from RI to NC last week and driving was almost unbearable, especially in stop and go traffic.
Now I know that waiting three years to get checked out has not been the smartest choice I have made :). I do not have a primary care doctor as I just switched health insurances. I called to get an appointment with an orthopedic doctor but can't be seen for a few months. I am not sure if I will need surgery or not. I am a severe/profound special educator and my job requires me to lift my students out of wheelchairs. Should I need surgery, I would like to have it on vacation where I can rest.
What do you think could be the cause of this? The only times it hurts is int he above scenarios. It does not hurt to walk up stairs or anything, unless I have just run or drove very far. Should I push to see a doctor sooner in case I do need surgery, or just wait the three months for this doctor?
My family does have a pretty big history of knee problems. My mother just had surgery, and both my brother and father have had surgery on both their knees ( my brother is only 34). Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

AnswerI would suggest a chiropractor for a couple of reasons. You should be able to get in for a visit quicker. A good chiropractor should be able to determine whether it is an orthopedic case, and refer appropriately. A good chiropractor should be able to assess and treat this (it sounds as if it is a ligamentous strain, but without a hands on exam it is difficult to tell). The treatment should also include a rehab program to help you recover from the injury and strengthen the area as well.
