Chiropractors/Frequency of adjustments
Expert: Scott F. Gillman, DC, DACBSP - 9/11/2009
QuestionCan you please let me know a source or published reference regarding regarding frequency of adjustments for common chiropractic care issues.
I have had a bout of sciatica in the last 2 months and have sought chiropractic care. I am female 45 years old otherwise very healthy and active with some history of back problems (3 acute episodes over the last 10 years) but no chronic pain. For previous acute episodes I have been given on average about 5 adjustments with no further problems.
My new chiropractor (I have moved) recommends a plan of 64 adjustments over the the next 52 weeks which sounds excessive and expensive. he claims that this can not only correct the current problem but also reverse and degenerative changes in my neck/spine. Is reversal possible? Is there any evidence for this type of frequent adjustment care? What is "standard" in terms of number of adjustments required for acute vs maintenance care?
Regards,
E
AnswerEileen,
Dump your new chiropractor! Or, you should bet money that he cannot find legitimate proof that he can reverse degenerative changes. Nobody can reverse degenerative changes. The frequency and claims are outlandish and it remains embarrassing to share turf with this charlatan. Most sciatica patients find some level of relief within a few weeks of treatment. This depends on the unique circumstances of the patient, and this also depends on whether the patient is someone who will respond to treatment to begin with. Some don't. If you are a responder to treatment, whether it be manual joint manipulation or flexion/distraction (which is a decompressive manipulation; see:

'Hope this was helpful.
