Chiropractors/Neck Pain

Question
Over the past few years, I have developed a habit of frequently popping my neck, as many people do. Sometimes after doing so, however, I feel a mild pain and tightness in both my neck and lower back, along with lightheadedness and slightly blurred vision. Because of this, I have made an effort to abandon this habit. My question is whether such activity could constrict the blood vessels connected to the brain, and if so, whether the damage to the brain caused by such a restriction would be permanent.

Answer
The short answer is yes....As a chiropractor, we are trained to do things correctly; we are not just "popping" joints.  If the incorrect manner is utilized, yes, serious injury can occur.  Vertebral basilar Artery insufficiency is one of the main concerns.  There is an artery that runs through the cervical spine, and, if pinched off, can lead to stroke or death.  You have the warnings signs...dizziness, blurred vision, etc.  I suggest you stop immediately before a problem is brought on. You may also want to be check by your family physician to make sure there are no underlying problems that may lead to the symptoms you describe.
