Question
I was told that there are certain techniques that should not be used if you have had a retinal detachment.  I was getting chiropractic care for neck and shoulder pain and 6 months after starting treatment had a detached retina with 2 tears.  Would like to know if this is true or not and if so, what manipulations should I avoid?

Answer
Hi Kelley,
I have not heard of any specific cases of manipulations causing retinal detachment. There are a variety of techniques that can be used when treating neck and shoulders. Perhaps you should discuss this with your chiropractor. Activator is a tool that can be used to adjust the neck without causing any rotation of the neck which may be beneficial in reducing the strain on the retinal muscles.

Hope this helps
