Question
My 20 year old daughter ran a min marathon. After, her knee was tight feeling. Its been since spring, but she still has the following....
swelling that comes and goes above the knee, but to the right of it and on the base of the thigh.
She said it clicks also. Any idea what this is and how to treat it until she can be seen (Christmas).
The swelling is a fluid. Its not hot or red.

Answer
Hello Jenny,

The symptoms could be caused by injury to the tendons, ligaments, or joint.  The best place to start would be a MRI of the knee, this will show any damage to the aforementioned structures and see what is causing the swelling and clicking.  Upon results of the MRI a proper treatment can be administered.  A common injury for runners is IT Band syndrome, a MRI and Orthopedic exam are necessary to confirm.

Have a great day,
