Question
Dear friend,
I am experiencing a clicking and misalignment in the base of my skull around the first cervical. I have tried a few chiropractics. What is your experience with working on this? Any suggestions? Now I am trying a specialized upper cervical chiro and may try a network chiro too.

I practice yoga, tai chi and chi gong. I recently learned how to strengthen my eyes with Chi and part of the method involved bringing energy to this base-of-skull point. I understand nerves go to the eyes from here. This would explain why my eye sight AND neck were deteriorating..

I hope my neck will be fixed soon and I will keep working to relax my eyes with the chi program.

Other suggestions?

Thanks,
Jake

Answer
Dear Jake,

I think you are a bit confused...the nerves in the upper portion of the back of the neck do not have a direct connection to the eyes.  However the back lobe of the brain, called the occipital lobe, does play a critical role in the processing of visual stimulus, and this may be where the confusion lies.  Concerning the Chi and focusing on the base-of-the-skull point, I am not trained in traditional Chinese type medicine, so I cannot give you any answers on that.  If you would like amore complete answer concerning Chinese medicine, I would suggest that you ask another expert here in the Chiropractic section by the name of Dr. Man Tran...he is an expert in that field.

What I can tell you is that all chiropractors are sufficiently trained to properly adjust the upper cervical complex, but an upper cervical specific chiropractor is generally better.  The reason for this is that they spend many additional hours studying the proper position and alignment of the upper joints of the neck due to the fact that the neurological information that goes through those areas is enormous.  Some of them have specific instruments to adjust that area as well such as atlas orthogonal trained chiropractors.  I think trying an upper cervical chiropractor is great, but do not neglect the other areas of the spine because it works and functions as a unit.  Good Luck Jake.

Respectfully,
