Question
Hello,

I recently injured myself in training for Mixed Martial Arts. I'm a professional fighter new in my career and proper healing is very important to me. My injury occured when I forcefully driven into the grappling mats on my left shoulder. My left shoulder is sore, but the real pain is near my right pec area, and feels a little bit like I cracked or separated something. I couldn't sleep all night, and I also feel it worse in different positions. The pain starts at about 2 inches below my collar bone.

Any help on the healing process would be appreciated.

Answer
Hey Ricky,

Very common injury in the world of MMA.  First you may want to get a x-ray just to make sure nothing is fractured.  Often a seperation of the Acromio-clavicular joint occurs and strain of the rotator cuff musculature.  You may want to see a doctor of chiropractic who specializes in sport injuries to perform soft tissue work on the affect muscles and to make sure the joint is functioning biomechanically correct.  Icing regularly while decrease the swelling. Increasing Vit. C intake and a multivitamin will help your tissue heal faster.  Slow range of motion exercises the first week, then rotator cuff exercises starting the second week with bands, may help speed your recovery.

Good luck in the Octagon/ring.
