QuestionHello, I was told by a chiropractor, after he took x-rays that I have a 100% loss of curve in my neck. (33mm) He has advised me to see him 3x's per week for 36 visits and he will then perform another x-ray to check for progress. He has advised me that another 30 visits will more than likely be necessary after the first 36 are complete; however, he'd like to do the x-ray after the 1st 36 to be sure. I am in extreme, daily pain but since I left his office, I've been depressed about having to go through this. He believes that through spinal adjustments and traction, he will be able to help me. How common is 100% curve loss? Is it usually correctable? Thanks, Shlonda
AnswerDear Shlonda,
I'm sure there must be something wrong with your translation about your neck curve, since 100% loss of a neck curve means that your neck is straight. A curve of about 35 degrees is deemed normal. Loss of a curve can occur following a neck injury. It has never been proven that attempting to restore a curve will reduce neck pain better than other methods. I am aware of the various traction methods, one being where your head is tractioned over a fulcrum into extension. My concern is that neck pain and neck curves are two different things. There is no good reason to subscribe to such a lengthy contract of care. 3x/week for 36 visits is, by reasonable clinical standards, uncalled for. I would suggest you find a chiropractor who will employ different methods, including soft tissue and exercise therapy, a better clinical diagnosis (beyond what your neck curve is), and a short initial trial of care, e.g. 3 to 6 office visits to start with.
'Let me know what you find.
