Chiropractors/Degenerative Disc Disease

Question
Hello Dr.,

I'm a 23 year old woman and I was recently diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in stage 3.  My chiropractor offered that it was caused by trauma and accelerated by my profession (I am an animal trainer, mostly big cats, and do a lot of heavy lifting).

He suggested that I see him three times a week for three months, and once a month after that.

I do agree that all people should see a chiropractor once a month, regardless of any conditions or issues.  But, seeing him so often for three months is, quite frankly, out of my budget.  Way out.

I don't want my condition to worsen, certainly, but I also don't want to file bankruptcy.   In your opinion, would it be okay to see him just once a week and practice PT at home daily?  And can you recommend any stretches (or sites for me to review)?  Or do you agree with my doctor, to see him thrice a week?

Thank you so much for your time,

Stephenie

Answer
Hello Stephenie,

Depending on your current condition ie pain etc.  Starting off you may want to be seen more than once a week.  However, there is no magic number!!!  You should go by how you feel.  As you progressively become better the treatments should spread out further.  Ideally when you are out of pain once per month is recommended to prevent setbacks.  You may also want to start and stay on Glucosamine and Chondritan supplement to preserve your joints!  Without a exam and location of the DJD I can not recommend PT or exercises, your doctor should do this for you.

Have a great day,
