Question
Just recently I have left lower leg pain when I flex to the right or bend down to the floor. Also, painful when I try to sit on a lower seat like the toilet and get up as well. Otherwise, I can walk and stand for hours and even jog. I don't know what could be causing this problem now? I am a healthy 59 year old female.

Answer
Dear Ms. Hafner,

I would like to get some more information. The leg has different anatomical compartments and areas of distinctive anatomy that are more easily differentiated by location, symptoms, etc...  Please allow me to ask a few more questions of you.

Where specifically is the pain in your leg?  In the calf, on the front side, inner/outer leg?  Aslo can you describe the pain, how does it feel to you?  Also, any history of cardiovascular compromise or high blood pressure.  Do you smoke at all?  Have you participated in any different activity/sport/etc.. in the last week or so before you noticed the pain in your leg?

I just want to get a little better background on what may be the cause of your recent problem, and other things that may contribute to it.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully,
Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
