Chiropractors/Middle back pain

Question
When I take a deep breath the middle right side of my back hurts.  It's not right on the spine but next to it. It hurts to take a deep breath, to walk or to sneeze.  My back was starting to feel better and then I had to sneeze and I'm in pain again.  What is this called.

Answer
Hello Kris,

Caughing or sneezing puts lots of torque/pressure on the spine and can subluxate the costovertebral junction (this is where the rib meets the spine).  Sharp pain upon breathing is common due to the expansion of the ribs during breathing.  A doctor of chiropractic can adjust this joint back into place reducing the irritation and pain.  You may want to stretch and ice too.

Have a great day,
