Chiropractors/Popping Sternum

Question
I've been experiencing a strange popping in my chest for about a year now. It started one morning when I woke up and stretched and it made like a tearing/popping sound, much like the feeling you get when you slowly pop your fingers. Now initially, it didn't hurt at all, in fact, it was kind of amusing, but about a week later (I worked as a stocker in a grocery store and the work was pretty strenuis) it began hurting. Not a sharp terrible pain, but more like an ache. I dont do pushups or workout much for fear that it wont heal or that it will hurt. I dont remember any particular incident that could've damaged my sternum. Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Answer
Jonathan,

The popping sound is likely from soft, sternal cartilage in the center of your chest.  You may have subluxated (threw out of whack) the little joints where the ribs meet the sternum.  These joints are called "sternebrae".  If the subluxated joint remains as such, the mechanical alteration can grow to become irritating.  You should try some manual methods, especially those that a chiropractor can offer, to see if helps.
