Question
Generally what amount of training/types of training is needed to become a chiropractor?

Answer
Dear Timothy,

The Doctor of Chiropractic program requires a minimum of 7-8 years of study to include a bachelors degree.  You will need to have all the basic science requirements fulfilled such as biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics as well as other undergraduate classes before you can get accepted to Chiropractic College.  Once accepted to the program daily class work is accelerated.  It is approximately five years of study that is compressed into a four year program.  For example 12 credit hours is considered full time for an undergraduate student, but in chiropractic college you will need to take a minimum of 20 hours per trimester.  Yes I said trimester...three 16 week periods year round, for a total of four years.  The program is much more rigorous than people are aware of.  It is just like being in medical school, but with less study in pharmacology/toxicology.

Subjects studied include:  anatomy, gross anatomy, physiology, pathology, dermatology, OB/GYN, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, public health, nutrition, biomechanics, radiology, x-ray physics, physical diagnosis, orthopedics, neurology, chiropractic philosophy, numerous adjusting classes, as well as clinical rotations.  this list is not inclusive, but gives you a good idea.  To gather more information on the differences as well as the similarities of chiropractic school and medical school, check out:  http://www.suncoasthealthcare.net/edu.htm
This page of my website has more detailed information.

You may also want to check out some Chiropractic College websites.  Some better schools to look at are:  Cleveland Chiropractic College, National University of Health Sciences, New York Chiropractic College, Western States, and Palmer Chiropractic College.
