Answer
Hello Sadie,

You may want to have a chiropractic exam on the neck and TMJ to determine which is the source of the pain, then a proper treatment plan can be established.  The general rule for ice is: New injury or acute trauma, anytime there is swelling, sharp pain.  Heat will bring more fluid into the joint or area of injury, this may increase the pain of a acute injury.

Have a great day!
