Chiropractors/dislocated rib
Expert: Scott F. Gillman, DC, DACBSP - 8/29/2006
QuestionJust recently i was told that i have a rib that "sometimes" gets dislocted from the spine, after complaining about a certain spot on my back that hurts, and feels as if it needs cracked. I was told that basically there was nothing i could do about it except take pain pills and possibly apply a cold compress...is this true? one would assume there would be a little more you could do about a dislocated rib!
AnswerKrystal,
From what I'm gathering by your description, your conditon is quite common. Odds are that your rib is not really "dislocating," but is dysfunctioning at its articulation with your spine. Often, folks with acute rib joint dysfunction (a real diagnostic entity with an ICD9 diagnosis code of 739.8) can experience sudden, sharp, debilitating pain as well as pain that refers into the chest or down an arm. Some will say it feels like they have an arrow through them, from back to front. Some go to the hospital thinking they are having a heart attack, only to learn that their condition is "musculoskeletal," and sadly are not referred to chiropractic providers for appropriate treatment. Traditionally, chiropractors have tended to these conditions successfully. So long as your phyical examination rules out any true joint instability or other pathologies that would make manual treatment unwarranted, you may find relief with the combination of joint manipulation and some soft tissue treatment (e.g. active myofascial releae or Graston Technique). A subluxating or dysfunctioning rib is not cured by pharmacologic agents.
