Chiropractors/numb fingers

Question
Dear Dr. Newhart, I have recently been experiencing numbness and tingling of my little finger, my ring finger and the associated side of the palm on my left hand. My thumb tingles mildly also. I feel absolutely no discomfort anywhere else, ie: chest pains, etc. I don't drink or smoke excessively and other than that, am in extremely good health. This seems to occur in the evenings. I have not been in contact with any power tools or such, so RSI can be ruled out. It doesn't go away when I massage either which leaves me rather worried. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Answer
There can be a few different causes for you symptoms. RSI doesn't necessarily have to be from power tools, so that may be an avenue.  Misalignment in the neck, elbow or wrist can cause impingement on a nerve.  Muscle spasm anywhere from the neck down can also put pressure.  You may want to check with a chiropractor that also deals with extremities to have it assessed, as well as your family doctor to make sure you have no other problems that may be leading to these symptoms.
