Chiropractors/rotated pelvis
Expert: Scott F. Gillman, DC, DACBSP - 3/31/2007
QuestionMy 16 yr. old daughter has an unstable pelvis and it keeps rotating anteriorly on the left side. She has had an ongoing problem for over 4 months with this which the physio says causes her hamstrings to keep pulling. She says the only tx is to strengthen her core to stabilize here pelvis. Is there any other way to keep her pelvis in alignment, or is this being caused from a problem elsewhere? She is a high level soccer player and in very good physical shape. She has played soccer for over 10 years, and this is the first time she has had this problem. She can't feel her pelvis being out of alignment but her hamstrings are always a problem (sore and tight)after playing soccer. She is also a high level volleyball player but soccer is the only sport affecting her hamstrings like this.
Please advise!!!!
AnswerWendy,
First, ask the "physio" what, exactly, does he mean by "Unstable" or "Alignment"? There is little such evidence of these entities as perceived by practitioners. I can place my hands on most people's pelvic joints and note asymmetry or what appears to be altered alignment. This is not a reason to provide or not provide treatment. Also, I would bet that her hamstring muscles likely are not the cause of her symptoms or problems. It may be more likely that she has a lower back problem that is causing referred pain into the pelvis or down into her hamstrings. A "physio", untrained in differential diagnosis, may not likely be able sufficiently understand or treat her problem. If your 16 year-old daughter truly had an unstable pelvis, she would not be able to run. I would suggest getting her evaluated by a physician, preferrably a well-trained chiropractic physician or an orthopedist that understands non-surgical back conditions.
