Chiropractors/sciatic nerve
Expert: Scott F. Gillman, DC, DACBSP - 11/21/2006
QuestionI went to the hospital about two weeks ago for pain in my buttock area that carried into my leg. I was told it was a problem with my sciatic nerve. I had this problem about 5 months ago and it lasted for 6 weeks. Today I woke up with it again after having it 2 weeks ago. I was told that I needed to see my Doctor and perhaps have an MRI done.
My question to you is " can a Chiropractor be of some help". When I had this happen two weeks ago I was laying in bed and everytime I would move I would have all kinds of bones cracking in my back. It was unbelieveable. I do have a bad posture and I don't know if that could be a reason or not. Seems like when I sit down to play my guitar for an hour or so is when I get this pain. So I believe that sitting for long periods of time may have something to do with it. Will I really know what the problem is without an MRI? Thank you for your time and BEST of all for being here for others!
AnswerDear Marsha,
Sciatica is commonly diagnosed and treated by chiropractors. While MRI may be helpful in learning more about the anatomy of the discs of your spine and whether there is true nerve compression or not, a careful physical examination by a chiropractor is an easy way to determine if you will likely not need MRI or surgery. Sitting, especially sitting with slumped posture, will put pressure on the discs of your lumbar spine. So please get evaluated. The chiropractor will test muscle strengths, skin sensation, and reflexes. They will also do various orthopedic joint maneuvers, e.g. a straight leg raise, a double leg raise, and others, all to determine how well you are and how likely it is that you will do well with conservative care. Treatment should include hands-on methods. It may also include joint distraction techniques. There likely is no need to obtain any additional xray. The chiropractor should also instruct you in home exercises. See some of my previous postings to know how to find the best chiropractors.
'Good luck.
