Question
I went to the chiropractor today and he said I have lost the curve in my neck and that I have pre-scoliosis. What does that mean I thought scoliosis is something you were born with.

Answer
Rayelle,

Scoliosis is defined as a side-to-side curved alteration to what should be a straight up and down alignment to the spine.  If you are a pre-adolescent female, then any small alteration to the curvature to your middle and lower back should be evaluated.  Scoliosis can be caused by different things, including congenital defects to your spine's architecture or diseases to the spine.  But in most cases, scoliosis, or curvature to the spine, is "idiopathic," meaning that there is no apparent reason for its cause.  It happens mostly to girls, with a rapid progression often between the ages of 12 and 16 years of age.  It is usually discovered during a posture exam where forward bending (e.g. touch your toes) reveals a one-sided hump of your rib cage on your back.  If you have that, and you are in your childhood or early teens, then it should be watched.  There is no known natural cure if you have it.  Very severe cases have to undergo surgical rod placement to make the spine straight again.

Having a lost neck curve is something altogether different. The neck curve, or lordotic curve, is the curve your neck makes from front to back, in a letter-C shape.  Loss of this curve is seen especially after injuries.   It has nothing to do with scoliosis.  If you are an adult, there is no such thing as "pre-scoliosis" or even anything that is considered an early stage of scoliosis.  I am not sure what your chiropractor is talking about.  Ask him/her to spell it out in exact terms for you.  You can read about scoliosis by going to www.webmd.com and entering it in as a search term.
