Question
Hi..I have been diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis. Was first made a ware of the stenosis about 8 years ago. In June we had an robbery attempt and break-in at our home which resulted in a nasty fight. Asa result, a few days later, I was experiencing terrific pain. Went to my GP, then to a surgeon for consult. just some basics...my question is: is it possible for spinal manipulations given in a chiro setting to cause the situation to get worse? and...should the chiro even attempt to do manip if a patient has severe stenosis..I thank you in advance for any help on this subject...

Answer
Benjamin,

Yes, with severe stenosis there is a much greater risk of complications if joint manipulation is too forcefull or if any rotational or other movement further compromises your spinal canal.  Gentle, graded mobilization and graded neck tractioning (by hand) is the way to start off.   There may be other mechanisms for your pain along with or regardless of the stenosis.  The chiropractor may be able to determine this.  So if you go, make sure the DC clearly understands the nature of your neck and you have clear discussion about how treatment is going to proceed.  If you cannot find any relief at all after a hand-full of treatment sessions, then odds are it's not going to work for you.

'Hope this helps.
