Question
why would i have to have a mri of my pelvis if i have spinal stenosis ...

Answer
Anna-

Good question. If you suspect that you may have lumbar spinal stenosis, MRI scanning of the lumbar spine is the imaging modality of choice.

Several excellent research studies further show that axial loaded MRI scanning of the lumbar spine significantly increases the diagnostic specificity of lumbar spinal stenosis. Axial loaded scanning is the simulated weight-bearing of the spine that reproduces the normal loading on the spinal joints and discs by compressing the spine at about 50 of the patient's body weight when the patient is laying on his or her back for an MRI or CT scan.

If your doctor has ordered a pelvic MRI to evaluate for stenosis, I'd recommend addressing this question to the ordering doctor.

I hope that this response is helpful for you.
