I am from the state of Ga. Tried the acupuncture once but now am trying light massages and will work up to more intensive ones. Hope and pray it works because i really hurt. Do you recommend any other options?

I tried acupuncture today for the above symtons and feel worse. The doctor is also a chiropractor and wants to take X rays and then manipulate my neck. I'm really concerned bout the outcome and does acupuncture hurt worse before it gets better?

Dear Annell,

I am so sorry to hear of your pain and the discomfort you are going through.  I wish you better.

My first question to you is what state are you located at?  The reason is that in some states, a chiropractor can perform acupuncture without an acupuncture license.  There is minimal training in that.  As in California where I am at, the state requires the person to be licensed to perform acupuncture.  This consisted of 4 years of study solely on acupuncture and oriental medicine.  

Normally, acupuncture may hurt during the procedure as needles prick the skin and should go away immediately.  There should not be lingering pain thereafter.  

Without knowing the whole situation, I cannot give proper advise.  However, it is a good idea to know the credential of the practitioner.

Thank you so much for your kind input.  I prayers are with you and I do wish you quick recovery.

If the massage helps, then stick to the therapy.  However, I would recommend to have a second opinion from another acupuncturist.  Each acupuncturist has their own method, philosophy and specialty besides the standard training.  Don't be afraid to express your concern during the consultation and usually the consultation is free.  Ask the office and see if you feel comfortable and has a vibe of trust during your interview.
