Chiropractors/upper back pain

Question
I'm 23 years old and for many years now (at least 10) I've been experiencing a sharp pain around my right shoulder blade that comes when I've been lying on my back or sitting somewhat reclined in a chair or on a couch for any longer than a few minutes. I have a slight curviture in my spine, I'm not sure exactly where and I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Its kind of hard to describe the pain but it hurts bad enough to where I am pretty much incapable of lying on my back at all. I try to massage the area but its hard to reach and really doesn't help. Just wondering if you have any idea what could be causing this pain.

Answer
Teri,

This surely sounds like a neck problem, where something in your neck is irritated and referring pain into the shoulder blade.  It could be an irritated disc.  It could be an unstable cervical spine vertebra (e.g. from loose ligaments).  Previous traumas to the neck, e.g. sports injury or whiplash can bring on these symptoms immediately or cause them to develop years later.  Your best bet is to get a physical exam by a chiropractor and see how to proceed after that.  If all is well, then you simply need some treatment and may do just fine.

'Good luck,
