Question
hello bruce,
i was checking out the  University of Maryland,Baltimore County.the university says that it is a "research university".what does that mean and how does it differ from a normal university?

Answer
Hasheem,

A research university has a strong focus on faculty research and publishing. This means that in some cases your primary professors are not as engaged in teaching, especially to teaching undergrads.

If you are looking to get a masters or doctoral degree, a research university can be great for that.

If you are in the market for a bachelors degree you should ask UMBC some serious questions about who is teaching undergrads there. Many research schools use grad students (teaching assistants) to teach the freshmen and even sophomore level courses.
