Question
Hi Todd. I' interested in becoming an Athletic Instructor. I would love to help athletes (specifically in Basketball) become better players. I want to help them become quicker, faster, better shooters, better ball-handling, etc. and i'm having a lot of trouble gettig information.  The only information that seems to come up on search engines is that which would apply to me if i were pursuing a career in Fitness Training or Athletic Training-which is more medical and has little to do with the the actual instructing to increase skill.  Could you help me sir please?

Answer
Jeremy,

Thank you for writing.I think the problem you are having is that most people who do what you are interested in don't have a major in that field. They tend to be top players that played the sport in college and while good, may have not been good enough for the pros. You don't say what age you are interested in helping. If high school, then getting a major in a topic of interest as a teacher and then working with the basketball team of the school that hires you as a teacher. If college, then I think you would need to be a top player in college and the major probably doesn't matter that much. Instead you are looking for connections through your playing in college.

I am sorry that this isn't more specific but this happens to be one of the areas where the education isn't probably as important as the talent you have in the sport yourself.

Good luck.
