Question
My son is a junior in high school.  He is very passionate about golf.  He has been playing since he was in 7th grade.  He has gotten most valuable player in Grades 9 (JV), Grade 10 (varsity), and Grade 11 (varsity).  He practices whenever he has spare time.  He even works at a driving range, were he can drive balls for free.  He is a good student.  I would say around a 3.0.  He is in honors classes in English and Math.  I just don't know where to start this college process.  He does want to play golf in college.  He wants to play for a good team that goes to the states, regionals, etc...  Any advice?

Answer
Hi Jay,

Thank you for the inquiry about your son, who sounds like a well balanced student-athlete.

As a junior, he is positioned well to begin the college recruiting process. A good percentage of the juniors "got out of the gate" in the beginning of January and as a former Division 1 college coach, I feel a proactive effort on the part of the family and prospect is crucial.

Currently, I work with 17 families and student-athletes from 10 different sports in advising them through the college search from start to finish. Firstly, we develop a general (1 year) recruiting plan, which is broken down into detailed time-lines. Secondly, we create an effective organizing system to deal with all communications, deadlines and calendars. Next, we embrace an educational approach, where I provide the athletes and families with recruiting tips as seen through the eyes of a former college coach.

The college athletics quest is, in my mind, a systematic approach that requires good planning and effective organization, along with timely and effective communication with college coaches.
