Choosing the Right College/IB Subjects
Expert: Susie Watts - 4/12/2008
QuestionDear Susie,
I am just about to begin my IB Diploma programme and have opted for the following subjects:
English HL, Computers and Information Technology HL, Business and Management HL, German ab initio, Environmental Systems and Societies SL and Business and Management SL. Please could you tell me what careers I could pursue with the aforementioned subject combination? I am interested in the more "english-based" professions and in Computers and IT. I'm in a fix as to whether any good college or university would accept such a varied combination of subjects. I can still change them and would be happy if you could answer my question as soon as possible and with some of your recommendations. Thank you!
AnswerI think I would opt for another course in lieu of one of your business and management classes. Concentrate a little more on core classes like history, science, etc. Don't worry about colleges or universities accepting you. They are always receptive to students who have taken challenging courses and the IB program is always well received. Any of the liberal arts majors such as English can lead to any number of careers. Businesses want students who can read and write well and know how to communicate. They also want to employ people who know how to think and be able to change in a changing world. This is something the IB program teaches and it is also something you get from a liberal arts education.
