Choosing the Right College/NYU

Question
Hi,

I think I severely messed up my junior year (this year), which brings my GPA down to something in the low 3.5s. At the end of freshman year, my GPA was 3.75, at the end of sophomore year, it was 3.67, and now it's gone down even lower. The problem is, I really want to go to NYU, and I know how selective it is. Does this low GPA mean I'm pretty much screwed?
Also, that was my unweighted GPA. My weighted GPA has stayed pretty much the same, 4.33 throughout high school. Will they take this into account? because I HAVE taken challenging courses. My extracurriculars are also pretty good I think.
Also, if I had a high SAT score, do you think that would help much considering that GPA?

Thanks,
Trisha

Answer
Trisha,

Selective colleges generally do look at the quality of the classes someone has taken, relative to what his/her school offers. Certainly having a high SAT or ACT would help you, but the process really looks at all factors.

You should feel free to call NYU and ask a staffer there for what last year's class profile looks like - be sure to get middle 50% ranges, as that provides a bigger picture of the types of students in a class.

Is there a decent 4 year college near you such that you could pick up a college class this summer or fall? Doing well in 3 or 6 credits can help when you apply to colleges - it confirms your aptitude for college work - something to consider.

Best wishes and let me know if you have more qestions.
