Choosing the Right College/College selection
Expert: Bruce - 9/2/2008
QuestionI am searching for colleges that have a music degree with concentration and training in music performance, mainly contemporary rock. We are aware of and have visited Berklee and Belmont. Oberlin is very nearby but unfortunately the most comtemporary program they offer is their new jazz program. Thank you.
AnswerDonald,
Finding such a music program may be a challenge as it seems that most good music schools are really steeped in the classical tradition. You may find that the best you can do is find a traditional school populated by students who are doing R & R on the side.
Having said that, I think your bet bet is to look at large public universities, since they would be the ones likely to have the resources to staff a traditional music dept and along with serving aspiring rockers. Perhaps these can be starting points:
North Texas University (have heard that modern is what they do)
Chicago area schools
Penn State
UCLA
Ohio State
Greenville College in Illinois has a Christian Contemporary music major which, interestingly, launched a successful group (Jars of Clay) right off the bat. If the religious aspect isn't for you, you might call someone in the department there and ask what schools they know that have a rock emphasis or option in the music area. CHnaes are they'll be glad to help if they can.
private schools to check out:
Eastman School (Univ of Rochester)
Ithaca College
I hope this info proves helpful
