Question
QUESTION: Hey I am a sophomore in high school and I live in Myrtle Beach,South Carolina. I would love to be a sports journalist/broadcaster. But want to find the right college. And i really don't want to go to college in SC. I have been emailing colleges i like but idk. I need help finding the right ones.

ANSWER: Hi Vincent,

It's good that you have some specific goals already. I encourage you to pursue them as actively as you can.

You have chosen a pretty competitive field, and one that is changing rapidly. I encourage you to find a college that is large enought that you can take courses in speech, new media (this is increasingly important - be sure that you develop an awareness of blogging, digital media, and all the other new things that will become an ever growing part of communication. But, also choose a school that is small enough that you get involved in things like school paper, sports coverage, etc. Perhaps a small Div I school would be good (places like Rider College, St Bonaventure, Jacksonville. etc).

Asbury College ha sbeen kknown to have a nice program. The school is in KY and has a religious flavor. If that's not for you at least check out the curriculum and use it as a beginning point in exploring such things.

Up north here, the best school for your interest is Syracuse University. Bob Costas is an alum, and other sportscasters, too. You should check it out for sure - the SU Newhouse School of Communication. At the bachelors or masters level it would be a nice choice.  St. Bonaventure also has an excellent journalism program, and in a small school setting.

Best wishes.

QUESTION: Thanks so much. And i want to go to a Division 1 school cause i wanna go to a school good in sports like basketball and football. Any colleges like that? and any of those colleges tuition gonna be 10000 to 20000?

Answer
It will be tough to get a school in that price range - be sure to work on your classes and to prep for the SAT and ACT so as to maximize your aid opportunities.

Smaller Div 1 schools:

Stetson (FLA)
Jacksonville (FLA)
St Francis (PA)
St Bonaventure (NY)
Niagara (NY)
Siena (NY)
Rice (TX)
Gonzaga (WA)
Elon (NC)
Wofford (NC)
