Question
Hi Todd.

I recalled years ago at my college where a fellow student told me that the "Ivy
League" universities are a sport league of schools that play football against
each other.  He told me to forget this "Ivy League" thinking unless I want to
play football. Basically, he said that "Ivy League" is for sports, not academics
and that most of the highly-selective schools aren't in the Ivy League.

1. Is is true that Ivy League is for sports, not academics?

2. Also, what do you know about Berkeley University?

Best regards,

Julian

Answer
Julian,

Your friend was basically correct that the Ivy League is a sports group like the Big 10, ACC, etc. It consists of 8 colleges that are some of the oldest colleges in the country. They are all strong academic colleges and that is why the term "Ivy League" is often thought of as academic.

I assume by Berkeley you mean the University of California at Berkeley. This is the flagship college of the University of California system and is often regarded as one of the top public universities in the country if not the world. While a very good school it has been suffering of late because of the financial condition of California and cutbacks to the University system.

Hope that helps.
