Choosing the Right College - Golf Eligibility Question

Expert: Tom Kovic - 3/18/2009

Question
My son is a High School sophomore with hopes of playing collage golf.  If he
participates in a two man best golf golf tournament that offers a $600 golf
card as a prize to the winning team and his team wins the tournament what
effect does this have on his NCAA eligibility?  If he does not accept the prize,
but his team mate does, will this impact his eligibility?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
My pleasure.

From what I can gather, prior to college enrollment, athletes can accept prize money but it cannot exceed their actual and necessary expenses (entry fees etc.) that cannot include additional fees (parents and coach's expenses). In addition, the event must be an "open" event.

If your son and his partner wins the event and his partner accepts the prize (card/money) your son's eligibility may be affected and I suggest you contact the NCAA directly at: 317/917-6222 and direct this part of the question to an eligibility representative.

Good luck!
