Question
I am 15 and a freshman in high school.  I am interested in teaching English to middle school students. I have been looking at different colleges and realized that almost all of them have an Education major and an English major but I'm not sure which I would be. And what level of a degree would I need to be certified.

Answer
Tori,

Good for you on getting an early start on finding the right college for you. It varies at different colleges but generally you would get a degree in English secondary education that would allow you to teach English at any grade between 5th and 12th.I would suggest that you talk to one of the middle school or high school English teachers from your school to see what degree they have for your state.  You are correct that almost all colleges have an English major and and education degree is also very common.

You should look into some more specifics like the size of the college, the location, how competitive the college is and issues of that sort. Here is a page from my web site that discusses some of the issues to consider.

Once you have some ideas of what you want from a college besides and English education major, then go the the College Navigator website to find some colleges that will fit your needs. That can be found at

I hope that helps you get started. Good luck.
