Question
My son is currently in a program where can earn credits online. He's given subjects to complete. Once he has mastered the course of study he earns a credit. Yet, at the same time he has had some severe issues with his ADHD over the course of his life. Now if he can obtain 5 credits by May 28, 2009 he will be graduating H.S.

He knows he's going to need alot of assistance. Will his IEP follow him into college and where can I find colleges to support his efforts?

Answer
Deleria,

Thank you for writing. IEP's do not follow students to college but if a student has a documented learning disability there are a number of colleges that will work with a student to accommodate their particular disability.

As far as finding the best college for your son, there are many issues to consider besides whether the college will accommodate his disability. For instance the size and the location of the college may make a difference. It may be difficult to find a college for Fall 2009 that has the resources he may need.

There are several websites to look at regarding the issue of learning disabilities and college. I would start with this page:
http://universityadvisors.blogspot.com/2008/09/helpful-hints-for-students-with.h...

and look at some of the websites mentioned on that page.

Another possible resource would be the K & W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities. Many libraries will have a copy of the K & W Guide for you to look at.

I hope this helps you get started on finding the right college for your son.
