Choosing the Right College - cross country

Expert: Tom Kovic - 4/26/2009

Question
How hard is it to be able to be in the cross country team of a university? What are the requirements and standards i need to meet up to? Mainly i want to attend a university in California.

Answer
Hi Jasmine!

Becoming a member of a varsity college team is an honor and a privilege and will be some of the most exciting and memorable times in your life!

Coaches are really looking at two tangible requirements when recruiting prospects. Firstly, they have to determine you have the academic strength to be eligible to practice and compete and meet the minimum admissions standards at the institution. Secondly, they will be looking at your skill as a runner and whether you have the ability and potential to be an "impact player" on the team. Finally, coaches are looking more carefully at the character of the prospects. They want strong links in their team "chain" and individuals who will be loyal to the coaches, the institutions and to the teams.
