Question Dear Mr.Johnson,
I know it might seem weird to have a 14 year old stressing about college, but I want to make sure I can do something with my life.
Music has always been a passion of mine, i have been playing piano for 4 years, and have been in chorus class since 2nd grade. I want a college that will make sure I have a greater chance of being on Broadway.
I took dance lessons when I was youger, took a break and now I am about to continue with Hip Hop/Jazz and Ballet.
I also love to act. I just took my first official Drama class and have enjoyed it very much. I have been accepted into the Southern Mystique Film Camp of 2009.
I want to find a college that will help me excell in all of these things.
Thanks,
Lottye
Answer Lottye,
First, let me say that you shouldn't be stressing over college but it is a good idea to be starting the process of finding the right college. There are many colleges all over the country that could provide you with a great education in music and drama. But, first things first.
The most important thing for you to work on over the next few years is to take challenging classes and get the best grades you can in those classes. That is the most important thing even for music and drama majors.
I also recommend that students visit some different colleges near where they live to get the feel of different types of colleges.
Once you have a better idea of the type of college you want you can then use a college search engine like College Navigator to help you find colleges with the characteristics that you want. Since you are interested in music and drama you would look for colleges that have programs in those areas.
You will also want to spend time over the next few years developing your interest in music and drama. Try out for different plays at your school and in your area. Maybe work on a play in a different capacity like stagework or costumes to get a different perspective. Also, be as involved with your music as you can in school as well as in the community. Are you good enough to compete in competitions? If so, start doing so.
I hope that helps you get started. But, again, don't stress out. Rather, take your time and enjoy the process.
