Choosing the Right College - college credits

Expert: Bruce - 7/31/2009

Question
I am currently enrolled in the University of Vermont as a full-time student but have outstanding credits I wish to fulfill. I'm interested in taking a winter course with transferable credits to count towards my undergraduate GPA, preferably in my home state of Massachusetts (Boston area). I appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Kate,

I take that you want to find classes that you can transfer into VT towards your degree. Given the constraints of the semester schedule, you may find that your best option is online coursework. I believe that the UMass system has online offerings (I know they do at the grad level, so I assume they do undergrad, too). I would start looking by checking out UMass online and aslo the web site for your nearest community college. Links off of those ought to take you to even more options.

In transferring credit, keep in mind:

Since you are already at VT, you should get course-specific approval from your advisor before signing up for any class you wish to transfer in, He/she may want to see the course description. If you have no academic major or advisor yet, check with the university registrar.

Most colleges will not happily allow the transfer in of upper level major courses, unless it is something they do not offer. It works best to bring in gen ed classes.

You likely will not get financial aid for the course you are bringing in. In some cases, it is possible to do so, but there are potentially complicated host school agreements, etc that would have to be filed.

I hope this info helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

Bruce
