I taught high school math and was a guidance counselor at a community college.

Strictly High School was a publication for high school students and I had a monthly column in that paper. Copies of those articles are available on www.CollegeConnectors.com. I'm a regular contributor to the KARE 11 morning program where I discuss college admissions topics. Those clips are available on the College Connectors website also.

So , do I stand any chance of getting into GeorgiaTech , UC Berkeley or any such university . I want to major in Comp Sci , BS.
And no other factor really matters to me like location , size , cost , etc.

ANSWER: Hello,

Your academic profile is good.  Your SAT scores are good also.  They're not excellent.  When you compare your SAT scores to colleges, realize that most colleges use only the math and critical reading scores.  For you, the total would be 1120 out of a possible 1600.  Your marks are good.

Admission to any UC school is very competitive especially for students from outside of California.  Georgia Tech also is very selective.

Your chances of being admitted to many schools in the US are good.  Just not the two you mentioned.

Also, most colleges have already closed applications for the spring semester.

Best wishes,

QUESTION: I have a doubt about semester system . how many credit hours make up a semester and how many semesters are there in total 4 years BS course.

Answer
Usually students take 5 courses per semester.  On average each course is worth 3 credit hours.  There are a total of 8 semesters in 4 years,  fall and spring.  Fall semester usually runs from Sept. through December and Spring semester runs from January through June.  Summer school is June through August.  Most students do not attend summer school.  But if they do, they can finish college in less than 4 years.

Hope this helps.

Valerie
