Question
Hey Bruce! I know its kind of late but Happy New Year!

I have already applied to Syracuse University with the early decision appication but have turned in my materials to late so I had to change it to regular decision. I am averaging a 2.1 right now in my senior year of high school but I am trying to bring it up to a 3.0 or higher by time I graduate. I have not taken any AP classes but I have taken many electives such as info processing, intro to computers,Accounting, and Advanced Accounting. I have taken two years of spanish, 4 years of math, 3 years of science, 3 years of history,4 years of engish, and 2 years of pe. I messed up in my freshman year by being careless but have shown significant process up into my senior year. I took the Sat subject in which I scored a 1340, Sat reasoning in which I scored 1450 and an 8 on the essay, and finally the ACT in which I scored a 15 composite and a 10 on the essay bringing my total engish/writing score to a 20. I have had a taste of college life when I took a difficult six week finance and accounting course at the university of southern california. I have plenty of work experience. Every summer for the past 4 years I have been working as a messenger at Los Angeles Superior Court House with my Uncle who is a paralegal filing and delivering important court documents. I feel I definetley have leadership credentials. I am the vice president of the buisness activities council (BAC) in which we plan events, fundraisers, and dances for our Buisness and Finance Academy (BFA). We have already finished a succesful basketball tournament and plan on having a game show concept once the new year starts. I am also working on a new consitution for the council that everyone can understand. I have a very interesting racial background. My mom is African American and My dad is Mexican American. I also have Indian and French blood in me from my mom's side (creole). Most importantly I feel that I have plent of volunteer credentials. As of right now I am an assistant coach in training for A World Fit For Kids. A program in which I will eventually volunteer in elementuary and middle schools afterschool to help with homework, snack distribution, motivate physical fitness with fun activities, and most of all just be a friend where needed. I have also volunteered by cleaning my community church for the past 4 years every saturday from 2-5 hours. Church is huge. One time I started at 12:00 noon and did not leave until 7:00 in the evening. I really want to go to Syracuse and major in communications/Broadcasting at the SI Newhouse School of Communication. I want to become a ring announcer for world wrestling entertainment (WWE) and also want to do animated voice over work. In all honesty on a scale of 1 through 10 what are my chances of being admitted in Syracuse University. Thankyou:)

Answer
Sergio,

Hi from New York.

You certainly have a lot to offer; your personal background is rich and interesting. I think you'll do great things on a college campus.

I don't know specifics about SU's admission requirements, but Newhouse is, I believe, pretty selective. What I think you ought to do is call the admission office and see what your chances are if you apply to Arts and Sciences - and find out what it would take after a year of good work there to transfer into Newhouse.

I would also make sure you have a couple other options on the list; a community college that you could commute to and a couple other 4 year schools that appeal to you.

Are you pretty interested in NY colleges in general or most in SU/Newhouse?  I can suggets other colleges if you are aiming to be in a particular region.

Will wait to hear back from you. Best wishes for 2010.

Bruce
