Question
my son is 16 and will be starting to look at colleges, he has ADHD, I would like to know what colleges are out there that offer specialized instructors/counslors for these students that have this type of learning disabilitie. he also plays sports, Football, and Baseball, he is very interested in attending a school that he will be able to participate in the sports.  We are interested in Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas area.

Answer
Dear Kristin,

Many of the students we work with have learning disability or ADHD diagnoses.  The diagnosis itself doesn't need to limit your search.  We work with matching students with colleges that meet their needs in other areas and then screen those schools for their learning support programs.  It's likely that whatever services and support your son has in high school will be available in college, he'll just need to be more assertive and take responsibility to make sure that he gets what he needs.  The difference between high school and college is that in college the teachers don't seek out kids to help them, the students need to seek help themselves.

Identify the specific services your son needs and then when you visit colleges arrange to meet with the learning support staff to assess whether or not they'll be able to meet his needs.

Please make sure that you're on top of getting testing accommodations for his college entrance exams if that's the type of service he gets in high school.  It usually takes a while to complete the ACT paperwork and get approval.

Best wishes.  We provide comprehensive college search and application support.  You can check out our services and qualifications at CollegeConnectors.com
