QuestionHello, my name is Kathleen and I am 17. I am struggling through school and have been passing by the skin of my teeth since freshman year. I have decided to get my GED not because I am dumb but because I have been dealing with depression. I realize that i will not going to be able support myself with just a GED but I can't handle going to a college for 4 or more years.
I want to get into a program were i can get to work in as little as two years. I don't want to make 80 thousand a year, I just want to live comfortably.
Are there any programs like this? Specifically in Connecticut or Rhode Island?
Maybe in the field of Health care (not nursing), massage/ spa/ wellness, or even animal care and training.
I've tried to find short term eduational programs but it's very difficult.
Thank you for your time.
AnswerI have several suggestions. First is to see a mental health professional for advice on curing your depression. Many people find that exercise and diet can cause a huge improvement. So does volunteer work doing something you enjoy. Work experience also helps you get a better job.
if you are using illegal drugs, stop. If you are using prescription medications or over the counter medications, make a list of them and review them with your doctor.
Many people in your situation work part time and go to community college part-time, taking one or two classes per semester. A neighbor of ours did this for five years, while also seeing a psychologist. He was no longer depressed, and was able to transfer to a four-year college, graduate, and get a good job.
The economy these days is poor, so even college graduates have trouble finding jobs that will enable them to support themselves. So they live at home and save money, and get work experience, and will apply for better jobs once the economy improves.
Good luck!
