Choosing the Right College/What do I do?

QuestionMy mother works at Hiram College, so she get's almost 'scholarship' money for me to go there once I graduate high school. The fact is that I don't want to go to Hiram. I know that it's a really great school to go to, but I've always wanted to get out of Ohio and explore the world, and since I was a little girl I've been dreaming about going away for college... My family doesn't have very much money, so this is why this is such a great opportunity. I feel spoiled for not wanting it, but I want to follow my dreams, and get away from home. I get really good grades and always challenge myself in school and such, and I think I could get lots of scholarships for other schools OUT of the state, and if I'm in debt then I can pay it off like every other college student has to do. I want to go into neuropsychology, and once I finish that... I mean I'll eventually pay it off. What do I do though? I've talked to my parents and they just think I'm a spoiled brat but I feel like they just want me to stay close to home... which I really do NOT want to do. I need to get out of this tiny little town.
AnswerI understand how you feel and I am sure your parents are looking at Hiram College as a good school and one that would cost a lot less than many other colleges. I also understand that you would like something different and that is not unusual for a lot of kids to want with a college experience. I don't think you are a spoiled brat, but I do think you need to work with your parents. I would suggest you look at some other colleges that offer good programs in psychology. You will find that at many small liberal arts schools. When it comes time to apply to colleges, tell your parents that you are willing to consider Hiram, but you want to apply to some other schools also. Meanwhile, start researching scholarships and also find out what kinds of scholarships are available at the other colleges that interest you. Many scholarships are based on strong grades and test scores and often community service. Your parents should also fill out the FAFSA form sometime in January or February of your senior year. This free online form tells you how much financial aid you should be able to receive from a college. Then you can compare the schools where you have been accepted and decide what is best for you.
