Choosing the Right College/Admission FAQs for International Student

Question
Hi Susie,
I am from India, I'm doing my 3rd year Computer Science Engineering from 1 out of 17 National Institute of Technology . I am into my 5th Semester [We Have 3 per yr]. And I am interested in doing MS from US in the same discipline. I have quite a few queries and will be really gratefull if you could clarify them for me.
So here I go ,
I am confused about the 4 point GPA system used by most US Colleges. We are graded on a scale of 10. So when a University ask for a minimunm of 2.5 / 3 out of 4 point Grading system, it confuses me. Presently I hv results till 3rd semester , and I am having a Credit Grade Point Avg of 7.5 [out of 10].
As I am an International Student from India, I will have to take TOEFL along with GRE. Will the preparations for GRE help me for TOEFL ? Or are they quite different ?
Most colleges are interested in GRE General test, like University of Cal. Berkley, states that last yr most of their successful applicants had scores up 90% in GRE. But they also state that to get into CS , GRE Subject test is preferred but not required. Is it really important to give the Subject test ? What score wud be acceptable ?
How much importance is given to underGrad level projects, Paperpresentations etc. ?
Any general pointers if u can give me will also be helpfull.!
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely
Rahul

Answer
There are different grading systems in the United States, but most are based on a 4.0 as the highest.  The most important thing for you to do is to continue to work hard in your classes and make the best grades you can.  You should be able to discuss your undergraduate projects on your applications or even in an essay which gives a college a better idea of who you are.  The GRE is not like the TOEFL test.  The TOEFL tests your ability to read, listen, and converse in English.  There should be some good websites where you can find preparation online for both the GRE and TOEFL test.  If a GRE subject test is recommended, it is probably a good idea to take it.  Scores vary so I would be more concerned with preparing yourself and doing your best.
