Choosing the Right College/College Degrees

Question
Mr. Johnson,

I'd first like to thank you for taking my question. I'm not certain that you're the right person to ask, but there was no subject specific to my issue.

At 22, I'm just looking at getting a college degree. My health makes it difficult for me to attend a physical college, and so I'm looking at online alternatives - particularly DeVry. The focus on my interest has been their Associate's Degree in Network Systems Administration.

When it comes down to it, are Associate Degrees worthwhile? Obviously, all education is worth something, but I wonder whether I actually have a shot at decent employment through that particular type of degree. I'd rather not waste my money (or my financial aid, I should say - certainly don't have enough of my own money for college)!

Thanks very much,

Jason

Answer
Jason,

Thanks for the question. Yes, generally an associates degree is worthwhile. The value of the degree depends on large part what field you are looking at. With something like a network systems administrator, I would guess that the associates degree is the most common degree of people with that degree.

The biggest caution I have for people looking at getting an associates degree is the question of where you are getting the degree from. While some of the for profit companies have a very good track record others are much more questionable. I believe DeVry generally does a good and reputable job at educating its students but ask lots of questions before signing up for any program. Ask about placement statistics, what help the school provides with placement and if possible ask to talk to several recent grads in your particular program to get their view of the quality of the school and its placement help.

I hope that answers your questions.

Good luck.
