Choosing the Right College/Sons` career choices

Question
Hi, Jake  I am writing about my son.  He is 23 yrs old and just starting a jc in  San Jose` and lives with his grandmother.  He worked very hard the last 4 years in security but ony made up to $14 an hour.  Right now he is REALLY struggling and mostly hating school because all he thinks is how long it will take...AND he has no idea what he wants to be!  I suggested a career councellor that might help him decide...he is thinking of possibly going to a trade school but worries that the education might be poor for the amount of money being forked over.  He is not sure where to turn.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you, judy

Answer
Judy,
First of all, I will suggest some websites for you.  These specialize in personality tests and work interest. He can just sit down and take these and it tries to evaluate his interests.  http://www.myfuture.com/career/career_discover.html#

They may work as a career counsellor, which is not a bad idea.  They may use similar tests to find the area of interest.  School is very frustrating when you don't have an idea of what you're expecting out of it.  These tests are a good start and will hopefully provide some sort of motivation for school.  A community college will provide a fair education at a relatively low cost.  That's a possibility.  I hope this helps answer your question and if you have any others, don't hesitate to ask.
