Choosing the Right College/The Yard...?
Expert: Susie Watts - 8/17/2007
QuestionDear Ms. Watts,
This is very simple: After completing community college next spring, I want to attend an Ivy League school.
I'm not an Honors student, I don't participate in extracurricular activities, I haven't become best friends with any of my professors, my family isn't wealthy, I'm not a scientific or mathematic genius, not one of my family members attended an Ivy League school (actually my sister and I are the very first of our family to attend college), I don't do volunteer work, I don't know any powerful politicians or noteworthy public figures, I was a so-so student in high school (about a 2.8 GPA), and I can't sing one word of the Harvard alma mater to save my life.
This is what I do have: A 4.0 GPA, no behavioral or academic troubles on record, and an endless supply of resolve and determination.
Do I stand any chance at all, or should I lessen my stress and self-disappointment by applying to a school better suited for people....like me?
PS - Seriously now, let's discuss grad school. Recently a literary agent showed interest in one of my novels. No promises yet, but I think the deal may go through before the New Year. If I start making a name for myself as an author, will I then have a better chance to attend grad school at an Ivy League university?
I'm 27 now, and will be almost 30 before I receive my Bachelor's of English. Perhaps I'm crazy, but part of me wonders how many Ivy League students are over 30...
Thanks, even though this whole thing is probably a huge waste of time.
Dan
AnswerMany ivy league schools are looking for first generation college students. They will certainly be pleased to see your GPA and the fact that you're writing a novel should weigh in well. I wouldn't focus on just an ivy league school, but consider any good school that offers a great program in English, especially writing, if that's your thing. While not too many college students are 27, that is no reason that they wouldn't find you interesting. Pursue your goals and don't give up.
