Hello,
I was wondering what colleges would be good for me. I want to major in medical technology or pharmacy. I will be a senior this year. I have a 3.6 GPA and am in the top 10% of my class. However, I am very shy and as a result have not participated in a lot of extracurricular activities. I did volunteer at my church in 9th grade and I participated in the Chemistry Olimpiad. What are your suggestions about where I should apply?
Thanks.

Hi Diana,
A couple of questions for you - are you interested in a particular area of the country for college?
With regard to your possible majors, which is of more interest to you, pharmacy or med tech?
Have you done any kind of career shadowing or read up on these careers to help you zero in on them as possible vocations?

AnswerThe University of CT and U of Hartford seem like places to start. You will find that for a med tech program you may have options that involve a year of study or two and leave you with professional credentials but not a bachelor's degree. All other things being equal, I suggest you get the full 4 year degree. This may give you options for moving into management or other leadership roles someday - and will distinguish you from other Med Techs who are capable but not degreed.
You may also find that there are colleges that do not have med tech programs of their own, but work out arrangements with programs that allow a student to study at the smaller college for 3 years and do one at the med tech place.
I hope this helps. Glad to answer more questions. By the way, you described yourself earlier as shy. Nothing to worry about, there are good and happy places in the world and workplace for people with all sorts of personalities, and you will find yours.
Regards,
