Choosing the Right College/Which degree

Question
Dear Holly,
I am a 36 y/o male in the US Navy. I have 11 years left before I retire. I am trying to decide if I should get a degree which is in a similar field as what I currently do in the Navy or get one in a different field (Which I might enjoy more). I am considering pursuing a BA Degree in Criminial Investigation focusing on Forensics. While my current job in the Navy is Cryptology (I basically intercept and analyze radio communications). Would a company hire me with a degree in a field where I have no experience and I am 47 Y/O?

Answer
Hi Daniel,
I don't really think that is a question I have the expertise to answer.  I certainly think it would be possible to get a job in a different field; if the employer understands the reasons why you wanted to switch they should appreciate that; many people switch careers multiple times during their lives these days.  Also, is there no way at all to get any kind of experience related to it while you are still in the navy?  If there is any way, you should probably try to do it, although I would understand if there were not.
Anyhow, good luck.
-Holly

Expertise

I can help you determine what kind of college would be best for you if you are having trouble deciding. I have knowledge of many of the schools in this country, as well as a good sense of what type of school fits what personality. If you tell me about yourself, what you do for fun, how you like to study, how important you rank academics, and other information like that, I can help you decide what kind of school would be best for you.

Experience

I am a current college student. I am absolutely enthralled with my school, and I had many choices to pick from, and feel that I made the best choice for me. I have some friends who have transferred to different schools after their freshman year, and I know and understand some of the pitfalls of being happy at different types of schools.
