Choosing the Right College/engineering schools

Question
I am a senior in high school and I want to study industrial engineering. What are the differences between getting a degree at the University of Michigan or Penn State and smaller technical schools like Rose-Hulman or Kettering? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Thanks!

Answer
Erik,

You can get a great engineering education at both a small school and a large university. The biggest difference will be the "fit" for you. Smaller colleges will generally have smaller classes and more attention from the professors. Many people learn better with this type of educational opportunity. On the other hand, smaller colleges won't have the resources or depth of instruction that the larger Universities will have.

If you haven't already done so, I would recommend visiting both a small college and a large university to see which feels like a better fit for your needs and learning style.

I would also discuss with each of the schools what their placement rate is after graduation and what the starting salary of their graduates is.

Good luck in the search for the best college for you.
