Question
My name is Justin and I know I want to be either and Athletic Directior/Gym Teacher which is has a major as Physical Education and a Guidance Councelor in a high school, which I think is sociology. So I think I want to either double mafor or major minor. So I was wondering if you can find me a college with both of these, and with a ski club or ski team. I want a smaller school under 10,000 people and I want to it to be in a 3 hr radius of Binghamton New York.  Can you possibly help me out. I dont really know what to do thanks alot!   Justin

Answer
Justin,

I've done some checking, based on the parameters you set forth in your e-mail, and it seems like there are two schools that fit your criteria: SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College.  Both have PE programs and seem to have some skiing opportunity.

As far as being a guidance counselor - you would need to go on to grad school for that, for a masters in school counseling. You could do that from a bachelors degree in Phys Ed, no problem, but if you can, take a few basic courses in psych while getting your PE degree: human growth and development, counseling techniques & statistics in particular.  I'm not sure what you would need to pick up to become a school AD. I'm guessing that it would be a few courses which you might be able to attach to your masters program, or pick up separately at some point.

Also, your Phys Ed studies would have you majoring in physical education; I don't think you would receive a minor. Be aware, too, that education majors are very full programs. if you can pick up some college credit while in high school it will benefit you in terms of flexibility.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
